Medicare Questions about Coverage

New to Medicare with Employer Insurance

The steps you will take will likely be different when you are still working. Many people work past age 65 these days, and this means there are decisions to make.

Should you keep your employer coverage and enroll in Medicare too so that it coordinates with your other insurance? Or is it more cost-effective to leave that employer coverage and choose Medicare as primary insurance and add a supplement?

The answers depend on several factors, such as the size of your employer and how much you pay for your portion of that employer’s coverage. Visit our New to Medicare with Employer Coverage page for a rundown on your options.

Does Medicare cover chiropractic?

Yes, Medicare covers adjustments (subluxation of the spine). It does not cover other services by a chiropractor.

Does Medicare cover vision?

Medicare covers diseases and injuries related to your eye. However, routine eye exams are not covered.

Does Medicare cover eyeglasses?

Only after cataract surgery. To learn more about dental, vision, and hearing coverage, click here.

Medicare Questions about Costs

Is Medicare Free?

Part A is free if you or a spouse have worked at least 40 quarters in the U.S. Part B has a monthly premium. Learn more about Medicare costs here.

Can my employer pay for Medicare Premiums?

No, they should not pay your bill directly. It’s best to pay your own premiums, and your employer can raise your salary to offset the cost of your benefits. Please be aware that your employer also cannot force you off of the employer group plan if you are still working.

Medicare Questions about Supplemental Options

When can I change Medicare Supplement plans?

There is no annual election period for Medicare Supplements. You can change your Supplement plan any time of year, but in most states, you will have to answer medical questions on the application for the new company. The insurance company will do medical underwriting and can accept or decline you. Always wait to make sure the new company approves you before canceling your existing policy.

Can I enroll in both Medigap and Medicare Advantage?

No. Medigap only pays secondary to Medicare if you are enrolled in Original Medicare. Once you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, your Medigap plan will not pay secondary. You only need one plan or the other.
